TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS

(For outdoor professionals, those who aspire to be outdoor professionals, first responders and experienced practitioners who desire to enhance their skill sets.. most of these classes are scheduled independent of the course calendar.)

LEAVE NO TRACE, TRAINER COURSE. (LNTT)

Become a certified trainer for Leave No Trace outdoor ethics and skills. This is a 2-day course and includes an overnight (camping) Designed for those who lead others into the outdoors in both mountain and river environments.

BACKCOUNTRY TRIP LEADERS COURSE (BTL)

Perhaps the true cornerstone of Shenandoah Mountain Guides, (and a course that we have provided to select clients for years) the BTL course consolidates our professional training segments and includes practical skill application over the course of four days in the Blue Ridge /Allegheny backcountry. The graduate of this course can be expected to be better prepared to handle many of the different issues that can arise as a backcountry trip leader. BTL is for adventure trip leaders, university outing club leaders, camp staff, scout leaders and those who enjoy (or want to more fully enjoy) the backcountry. (BTL graduates will have national and internationally recognized training and trainer certification)

BTL topics include:

  • Meal and menu planning
  • Gear selection maintenance and management
  • Land navigation
  • Applied fieldcraft*
  • Emergency procedures, actions, and decision matrices
  • Leave No Trace ( International trainer certification)
  • Survival
  • Water acquisition and treatment issues and options
  • Land/Agency regulations
  • Risk management
  • Psychology of group leadership and dynamics
  • Wilderness First Aid

RAPPELLING FOR RESCUE (RR)

This course is designed to take the most basic of mountaineering skills, rappelling, and transform it into a powerful life saving tool. Course covers basic rappelling skills and techniques for anchor construction, knots, ascension, changeovers, patient stabilization and pick off /rappel skills.

(STUDENTS MUST BE COMFORTABLE IN EXPOSED, OVER-THE-EDGE ENVIRONMENTS)

FIELDCRAFT FOR FIRST RESPONDERS (FCFR)

A necessary course for any first responder who, potentially, may find themselves outdoors in an uncontrolled environment, with a minimum of gear. From knots to shelter construction, water acquisition to fire building, basic navigation skills to signalling.. This fieldcraft course covers the things that can make the difference in your ability to provide quality patient care.

THIS IS A FIELD COURSE. Students should dress and prepare for outdoor, mountainside conditions.
